Its time to put 2021 behind and look forward to what 2022 has in store for us. Just like past years, we at I2CAN are releasing our predictions and trends for the upcoming year. We are confident that 2022 will be an exciting year for aesthetics industry in India, as we move past the pandemic and get our lives back on track.

As non-invasive treatments increase in popularity, the demand for aesthetic treatment is growing rapidly to improve the physical appearance and treatment of skin disorders.

“Non-invasive aesthetic procedures will continue to gain more popularity in 2022”

Nowadays, men & women of all ages are spending more and more time on social media platforms where they share selfies and use filters to look more beautiful which fuels their desire for makeover and transformation. As people are noticing their outer appearance they want to make changes to look better.

Earlier, plastic surgery was fashionable. Not only was it expensive, but the recovery time was much longer. Recovering takes days or even weeks of downtime! Not everyone is ready to make such a sacrifice.

Most of the non-invasive procedures have zero to no downtime. A lot of them can be performed during lunch break or on the way home from work. It looks good and is easy to make it unobtrusive.

If we look at aesthetic trends of 2021, there are many non-invasive aesthetic treatments such as Botox, Body Sculpting, Lip Filler, Skin Tightening, and Medical Facials such as Microneedling. These treatments are cost-effective when compared to alternative surgery, need very little recovery time and involve much lower risk.

The industry has much to catch up on.Year 2020 saw a major decline in demand due to lock down imposed due to pandemic for substantial part of the year. Demand relatively picked up in 2021 but has still not reached pre-pandemic levels.

Prediction – Both invasive and non-invasive aesthetic procedures will continue to grow in popularity in 2022. But we predict that the growth of non-invasive procedures will be much faster and they will continue to expand their percentage share within aesthetics domain.

During pandemic, we saw a clear decline in innovation in the aesthetics space. As we move past the current pandemic in 2022, we will see revival in the innovation and we will see some innovative new machines and technologies in this space.

Prediction – Innovation in the space will get revived and we will see some innovative new machines and techniques by the end of 2022.

A Continuing Trend: Non-Invasive Aesthetic Procedures:

As technology evolved and non-invasive machines and procedures improved in quality, they became a viable option for the patients. Last year more than 80% aesthetic procedures (in terms of number of procedures) performed were non-invasive in nature. This percentage will further increase in 2022 and we will see more patients preferring non-invasive procedures. Following factors will contribute to this trend:

1. As the awareness about aesthetics treatments grow, more people will have their first aesthetic procedures done. Most of these new entrants will prefer to start with non-invasive procedures rather than invasive one’s

2. As people get busier, any downtime after the procedures will be more unacceptable to them. This means, they will prefer non-invasive treatments

3. With improvement in technology, efficacy of non-invasive procedures will increase, hence they will become more popular

Why will people opt for aesthetic treatments

One factor is, people want to look natural and healthy. Therefore, we believe that aesthetictreatments will be done more frequently and the difference between regular health treatments and aesthetic treatments will reduce.

People want to reduce the signs of aging and stay young as long as possible. Both women and men want to look more natural as they get older, and more and more people are choosing these enhancements.

Instead of going under the knife for dramatic surgery, people are now seeking small subtle changes when it comes to problem areas.

Another factor that has greatly influenced the popularity of these aesthetic treatments is social media. People want the best look on Facebook and Instagram (no filters!), but still get the most natural look possible.

If you’ve ever tried to take a selfie, you know how difficult it is to achieve perfect skin without the need for makeup and other skin rejuvenation treatments that don’t require editing before posting.

Social media also introduces key trends in aesthetics by celebrities that are influencing the younger generation to change their own appearance.

1. Popularity of Botox® and Fillers based treatments will continue to rise

In both 2019 and 2020, facial rejuvenation was one of the best aesthetic treatments. This trend will continue in 2022. Most of the aesthetics treatments take time (from few weeks to few months) to start showing visible results.  Botox® and Fillers are the only exceptions to this trend where results are instant.

When it comes to changing one’s appearance, Botox® and dermal fillers have been the most popular non-invasive treatments on the market for the past decade. We assume that this trend will continue to grow in 2022 and will be popular. Treatments such as Botox®, Disport®, Xeomin® or Juvaud® consist of neurotoxins. Neurotoxins are said to relax muscles when injected into the skin. It helps with wrinkles, glabellar wrinkles, crow’s feet, and various other facial wrinkles, slowing their formation.

On the contrary, dermal fillers like Juvederm are used to treat fine lines and wrinkles by adding volume to various problem areas of the patient’s face such as the cheeks, chin and eyes. Fillers come in a variety of types based on texture, viscosity, strength, and a variety of other  properties.

Prediction – Popularity of Botox® and Fillers will continue to rise in India and it may end up becoming the most popular aesthetics treatment. These are the two non surgical treatments options with quickest results and hence people will continue to opt for these treatments. Most popular treatments done using  Botox® and Fillers will include cheek enhancement, eyebrow lift and non-invasive face lift.

So far, there is a social stigma around these treatments and they have not been openly discussed. Ingestion of Botox® is considered a major change in the face and body. In many cases, people feel judged by their colleagues because their use of these treatments.

We expect this to star changing. More and more people will opt for these treatments and hence they will become more acceptable. In fact, their use may reach a point where they become more popular non-invasive aesthetic treatment in India. Currently they stand at number 2 right behind Laser hair removal.

2. Non-surgical rhinoplasty:

The nose defines a person’s face. In the past, rhinoplasty was a common surgical procedure. It was a typical procedure performed when someone wanted to change the look of their nose. Lately, non-surgical rhinoplasty has become very popular with people. In fact, statistics show that this procedure will be part of the best aesthetic treatment in 2022.

This procedure uses an injectable Filler to reshape the nose. Patients achieve results similar to traditional rhinoplasty or rhinoplasty surgery, but without the need for invasive surgery. This procedure uses Fillers such as Juvederm and hyaluronic acid. This treatment is ideal for anyone who wants to create nostril symmetry or smooth bridge bumps.

Prediction – Non surgical rhinoplasty using Fillers will become more popular in 2022. New types of Fillers will be introduced in the market, which will be longer lasting and hence repetition of the procedure will become less often.

However, this procedure does not give permanent results and the patient must perform this procedure again within 9 months to 24 months.

Recovery time from this procedure is about 2 weeks compared to traditional rhinoplasty, which takes about 4-6 weeks. It takes about 15 minutes to complete the session and the patient can see the results immediately.

In terms of price, this non-surgical rhinoplasty is significantly cheaper than its surgical alternative. It can cost a person anywhere from INR 30,000 to INR 50,000+.

How can you learn to perform non surgical rhynoplasty: To benefit from this trending treatment, you can attend our unique course in Botox® and Fillers. The course has 4 levels. Each level teaches you increasingly more complicated treatments using Botox® and Fillers. For more information, you can visit our website on http://iican.in/doctorscourses/

3. Face tightening procedures will gain momentum:

Collagen and elastin are present in the skin which helps to give it elasticity and structure. Starting from early 20’s, body starts to lose 1% collagean and elastin every year. This causes the skin to lose its elasticity. However, with the help of certain procedures, levels of elastin and collagen can be restored in the skin, hence bringing back the elasticity.

According to Google, the number of searches for “mini face lift” increased by 160%. According to the British Association of Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the demand for virtual counseling increased by 70% during the pandemic. Performing a facelift surgical procedure can be dangerous as well as invasive and requires enormous time and money on the part of the patient.

Laser tightening of the skin is a painless procedure that helps to improve the sagging of the skin and give it new life. It helps reduce thin lines and undo damage from the sun. Target laser beam is used to heat soft tissue. This helps to initiate the healing process of the patient’s body, and the body begins to produce more collagen and elastin which results into tighteningof skin.

The most common areas that can benefit from this laser skin tightening procedure are the arms, neck, eyes, abdomen, and chin areas. Treatments such as RF/MNRF (Thermage) and HIFU (Ultherapy) have a tremendous effect on the face by helping to restore the collagen lost in the skin and restore the watch. Below are the details of these treatments.

Prediction – Non surgical face tightening or face lift will become more popular in 2022. All 3 technologies namely Laser, RF/MNRF and HIFU are effective. But we see the popularity of Laser based treatments will slowly decline and HIFU will become more popular.

RF/MNRF (Radio frequency or Microneedling radio frequency):

It uses a small device to heat the skin at a radio frequency that activates the production of collagen. This immediately tightens the skin. This treatment causes the healing process of the patient’s skin and improves the accumulation of collagen.

It is a great option for those who want to tighten the skin on the underside of the neck and face while improving and tightening the elasticity of the skin over time. The results of this procedure are very long lasting. MNRF is an improvement over traditional RF based treatment, where a special cartridge is used to deliver RF waves directly to dermis. This improves the efficiency of the procedure and also provides benefits due to effects of microneedling.

HIFU (Highly intense focused Ultrasound):

By using microfocused ultrasound, Ultherapy helps stimulate natural cell repair. Ultrasound helps target the structural layers of the skin to improve collagen production in the patient’s skin.

The end result is to tighten, tone and lift the patient’s skin, thereby rejuvenating facial features. Results are displayed immediately and last about 3 months after treatment. However, with technological improvements, now the results can last up to 6 months.

Another use of this machine that is becoming famous is the contouring of the body that is done to tone a person’s skin. This procedure is ideal for certain body parts such as the abdomen, under the chin, and thighs. It uses a laser to heat the fat cells and cause them to contract. In addition, this process requires no downtime and can be run quickly.

4. Chemical Peels and Body Chemical Peels are here to stay:

The skin is the largest organ in the human body and it is very important to take care of it. The structure of the skin changes over time. Chemical peels can help with this. Chemical peels have the distinction of being the longest known aesthetics treatment know to mankind.

In recent years, facial and body chemical peels have regained their popularity, and people who were predicting that these treatments will go out of fashion soon, have all been proven wrong.

The main purpose of chemical peels is to remove the outermost layer of skin. Removing the top layer of skin will make the underlying skin healthier. It also helps improve the scars caused by acne. People mostly start to do chemical peels on their faces, but body chemical peels are also becoming more and more popular.

Chemical Peeling uses a powerful chemical peel to remove the patient’s scars, work on uneven skin structures, remove dead skin cells and soften fine lines. Despite regular use of sunscreen, human skin can be damaged. One of the benefits of chemical peels is that this procedure helps to combat many of the natural damage to the skin.

One of the benefits of chemical peels is that this procedure helps counteract many of the natural damage to the skin. A strong combination of certain chemicals helps to peel off the skin and remove the top layer.

Prediction – Chemical peels are back and are here to stay. Peels like “Yellow peel”, “Black peel” and “Pumpkin peel” will continue to do great in 2022. We will also see introduction of some new innovative peels this year. All in all, it will be an exciting year for chemical peels.

Chemical peels help relieve blemishes and hyperpigmentation caused by sunburn damage. It takes about 3-4 days for the skin to peel off and the underlying healthy, young skin to appear.

Cold seasons, such as autumn, are actually the best time to follow this procedure, as colder temperatures and less UV light can help with quicker recovery.

Coming to body chemical peels, the skin of the body is less sensitive than the face, so medical professionals use a stronger mixture of chemicals. The formula used is stronger and contains higher concentrations of active ingredients. Body Chemical Peeling helps black spots, dryness, stretch marks, keratosis pilaris and smoothes the texture and skin tone of the patient’s arms, legs, hands, chest and back. This procedure has great benefits for both face and body. Removing the outer layer of the skin improves the absorption of skin care products.

Talking about the results, you can already notice a significant improvement in skin structure after one or two sessions. However, facial skin heals differently than body skin. Certain skin conditions may take some time to display the results. For example, you may need about 6 treatments every 3 weeks to soften the fine lines and even out the skin tone.

If a patient wants to get rid of acne on his body, he may need about 6 treatments every 2 weeks.

Chemical peels can also be done on the feet, helping to remove debris from the heels and give a smoother look. People who are worried about acne caused by wearing a mask can greatly benefit from chemical peels. This procedure is great for “resetting” the skin by carefully removing the top layer and revealing the much thicker and healthier skin underneath.

Chemical peels are available in a variety of designs and strengths, including mild peels like glycolic peels and strong peels like TCA peels.

One session of chemical peel can cost anywhere between INR 1,500 to INR 3,000. Aestheticians generally recommend a cycle of 6 sessions with a gap of 2 – 4 weeks between the sessions.

How can you learn to perform chemical peel treatments: To introduce this treatment in your clinic, you can attend our Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Cosmetology course. For more information, you can visit our website on http://iican.in/doctorscourses/

5. IV vitamin therapy will make waves:

The trend of IV vitamin therapy is getting more popular in the list of top aesthetic treatments.

In some areas, it is also known as IV nutrition therapy, IV therapy and intravenous therapy.

This particular treatment offers a variety of nutritional benefits.

IV Vitamin therapy allows patients to get effective amounts of essential vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. All of these nutrients are supplied directly to the patient’s bloodstream via the infusion line. This method allows the body to heal at the cellular level.

Compared to taking dietary supplements, IV therapy helps the body absorb nutrients faster.

In addition, nutrients are supplied in higher concentrations. This particular remedy is designed to help serious health problems, improve overall health and prevent illness from attacking the body.

In this method, the infusion ensures that all nutrients are properly absorbed by the patient’s body, greatly improving the effectiveness of the treatment. In IV vitamin therapy, the nutrients that need them are supplied directly to the patient’s somatic cells. These IV drops are known to improve the functionality of various body systems. By injecting a mixture of essential nutrients directly into the body, patients experience rapid and effective results.

Prediction: Social media is abuzz with talk of IV vitamin therapy these days. Of course, the general public would like to try to see what all the hype is. It is beginning to reach a turning point and people will go crazy about this treatment in 2022. This is what will make it the most trending aesthetic treatment in 2022.

Till date, there is no scientific evidence for this particular treatment and no clinical studies have shown that this treatment is absolutely necessary to maintain good health. However, there are patients who absolutely love IV vitamin therapy and swear by all its benefits. Patients claimed that this therapy helped improve their physical health.

6. Microneedling combined with PRP will become more popular:

The microneedling procedure is used to reduce the signs of aging. Healthcare providers use some type of roller or device with a needle to pierce the patient’s skin. This helps stimulate the production of new collagen.

PRP or Platelet Rich plasma can be added to the microneedling session either topically or by injection. It is known to potentially aid in the healing process and reduce the time it takes for redness to disappear and swelling to decrease after a microneedling session.

The combination of PRP and microneedling sessions are believed to give better results to patients undergoing treatment for acne scars.

Although microneedling is used to treat different skin problems in different parts of the body, most PRP research focuses on facial treatment. The term “Vampire Facial®” (registered by designer doctor Charles Runels, MD inventor of OShot®, PShot®, Vampire Facelift® and Vampire Breast Lift® procedures) has become popular in recent years and refers to the combination of microneedleing and PRP, the latter process is done locally.

The cost of a microneedling session depends on the location of the patient and the treating physician. In general, a combination of microneedling and a PRP session costs about INR5,000 per session. Compared to, a typical facial microneedle treatment costs about INR 2,000. When combined with a PRP session, the cost tends to be much higher.

Prediction – Vampire Facial® and use of Microneedling and PRP combination for scar treatment will continue to gain popularity in 2022. Some doctors claim the results of scar removal using this method are as good as Fractional CO2 based treatment and has absolutely no downtime. This entitles this treatment to be in our prediction of the most trending aesthetics procedure of 2022.

The duration of the result depends on the type of microneedling session performed by the patient. Patients often need some treatment to see complete results. The majority of people with

microneedling had 3 to 6 sessions, with an interval of about 2 – 4 weeks between each session.

How can you learn to perform microneedling with PRP treatment: To introduce this treatment in your clinic, you can attend our Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Cosmetology course. For more information, you can visit our website on http://iican.in/doctorscourses/

7. Permanent makeup will continue to make waves

Permanent makeup is a set of treatments including microblading of eyebrows, lip micropigmentation and scalp micropigmentation. This segment showed lot of strength last year and it will continue to grow in popularity in 2022.

Permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique which uses special tattoo inks of various colors to produce designs that resemble makeup, such as eyelining and other permanent enhancing colors to the skin of the face, lips, and eyelids. It is also used to produce artificial eyebrows, particularly in people who have lost them as a consequence of old age, surgery or some disease.

Various techniques and devices are employed to generate this effect. This includes techniques like micropigmentation and microblading. The results of these procedures is not permanent and lasts anywhere between 12 to 24 months, at which point it has to be redone.

Prediction –  Popularity of microblading and micropigmentation treatments will continue to rise in 2022. Tattoo ink quality will improve and more color options will be made available to customers.

These procedures have gained momentum in past few years. With people spending more time online due to pandemic, they want to look good and presentable all the time. Schedules have become very flexible with working from culture, and hence meetings can get scheduled at crazy hours. With permanent makeup, people are always ready to face the camera.

How can you learn to perform microblading and micropigmentation procedures: To introduce this treatment in your clinic, you can attend our 4-day course in microblading and micropigmentation. This covers microblading of eyebrows, lip micropigmentation, scalp micropigmentation and permanent beauty spot. For more information, you can visit our website on http://iican.in/doctorscourses/

These treatments (eyebrows, lip and scalp) generally need 2 sessions. One for the main treatment and one session for the touch up. Scalp micropigmentation can take ore sessions, depending on how big the patch is. People are charging anywhere between INR 10,000 to INR 20,000 for microblading of eyebrows, INR 18,000 to INR 25,000 for lip micropigmentation and upwards of INR 30,000 for scalp micropigmentation procedure.

8. IV Based Glutathione therapy will make people fairer

Exploration of treatment options that may help attain a lighter skin tone or fairer complexion has been an ongoing phenomenon in people with darker skin types. With mostly darker skin type people in India, this treatment is always in high demand here.

Mostly topical agents originally developed for treatment of hyperpigmentation, such as skin lightening therapies are used for skin lightening procedures. Topicals containing hydroquinone, alpha and beta hydroxy acids, tretinoin, mequinol, arbutin, vitamin C, soy extracts and concoctions of multiple ingredients are now in vogue for treatment of skin lightening, at least of the face, neck and other exposed parts. The local adverse effects of these agents and the quantity required for large surface area application constitute major limitations of this approach. Understandably, the effect of such locally applied topicals remains limited to the application site alone without any notable systemic skin lightening effect.

Glutathione, being a strong antioxidant with additional anti-melanogenic properties, has recently become the most popular “systemic skin lightening molecule.” The most “popular” route of administration of glutathione for skin lightening has been intravenous (IV). In addition to it being one of the richest antioxidants, it is being promoted as a skin-lightening agent, following the discovery of its antimelanogenic properties. Amongst the many mechanisms postulated to contribute to its antimelanogenic properties, inhibition of tyrosinase enzyme, skewing of melanogenesis from the darker eumelanin to the lighter phaeomelanin, and scavenging of free radicals seem to be the most important.

Prediction –  IV based Glutathione therapy has become a craze in India now and its popularity will soar in 2022. As clients in India continue to look for lighter skin tone, this procedure will remain the procedure of choice, since its currently the only option for whole body skin lightening.

Topical and oral gutathione is available, but absorption becomes a major problem and that inhibits their efficiency drastically. Hence IV based glutathione is considered to be the best way to administer Gluthathione treament for skin lighetning.

Hailed for generations as a “magical skin whitening” molecule in countries like the Republic of Philippines, glutathione has seen a rapid spread in its popularity across the globe in a short duration of time. Despite all controversies, its popularity is soaring in India and most aesthetics clinics in India are now offering IV based Glutathione therapy for skin lightening.

This needs 10 sessions in the beginning followed by one session every month for mainteance. Each session takes around 20 minutes and depending on the dosage, they can be 3 days to 1 week apart. Total cost of this treatment can range anywhere from INR 50,000 to INR 2,00,000.

How can you learn to perform IV based Glutathione procedure: To introduce this treatment in your clinic, you can attend our Post Graduate Diploma in Clinical Cosmetology course. For more information, you can visit our website on http://iican.in/doctorscourses/

Now, people can achieve their desired appearance without worrying about going under the knife.

The aesthetic trends mentioned here are already on the list of top aesthetic treatments or are heading towards the top. To prepare for 2022, aesthetic practices need to come up with an appropriate plan.

Health care providers need to consider patient demographics and clinical goals in order to develop a well-designed plan for success. The pandemic is still a problem, so practices need to be adapted in order not only to survive, but to continue to grow and prosper. Safety precautions are important to everyone who enters these locations, including customers, employees, and medical professionals.

Aesthetic medicine trends are constantly changing as new trends emerge. What is popular today may not be so popular tomorrow. As people are getting more concerned about their outer appearance and always looking for change or improvement to look better, the need for non-invasive aesthetic treatments will continue to grow as the world moves on to 2022.
